Harare miniskirt march

In February 2012, women led by South Africa’s ruling party ANC Women’s League took to the streets of Johannesburg, South Africa in miniskirts protesting against harassment of women wearing miniskirts at taxi ranks.

Yesterday another miniskirt march was held in Zimbabwe’s capital city,  Harare organised by a Women’s Rights lobby group, Katswe Sisterhood reiterating the same message as their Johannesburg counterparts relayed two years ago.

The Harare march was dubbed “Reclaiming Our Streets”.

“We are reclaiming our streets, communicating the message that Zimbabwe is our home too, we shall be free in our city,” said Talent Jumo the director of Katswe Sisterhood.

It is true, that Zimbabwe is home to these women in miniskirts. However, it is also home to those touts at the taxi ranks in Harare whose reactions to miniskirts is just the same as the touts in Johannesburg.
