“Soulful Mindz is a little band I started in June this year. Now, it has broadly expanded into something more than just a band. My vision for it has evolved into something bigger. Soulful Mindz is now a platform or music field that invests itself into live shows. I have discovered that there is so much talent everywhere, but the media (the papers and TV) never gives any chance really to the many new talented people out there,” Sailas Mutambalika says as he talks about the birth of Souful Mindz (S.M).
He goes on to say, “Soulful Mindz was blessed with an 800 seat venue in Fordsburg, Johannesburg by a close Pastor. We also have some borrowed equipment. So the idea is to slowly build up momentum for ourselves to a point where we will have enough funds to buy our own equipment.”
Soulful Mindz held their first show in August. After getting a huge positive response, they planned for a second one. The show initially scheduled for October was moved to the 8th of November due to clashes with other shows in Johannesburg. The ‘It’s Only The Beginning’ Concert promises to be bigger and better than the first. The venue is the Majestic Theatre just after Oriental Plaza shopping centre in Bree Street. The tickets are going at only R50 each.
S.M. will feature five lucky artists chosen by auditions on their stage on the 8th. Auditions were held for comedians, singers (bands or solo), poets and any form of artists. Only five lucky artists are to share the stage with S.M. Auditions closed yesterday and winners will be notified on the 30th of October. Youth of any age, race, colour, creed or nationality, are welcome to attend the concert. It will start at two o’clock and end at six o’clock in the evening.
Sailas is a young Zambian man living in the East Rand town of Germiston, South Africa. His family came to South Africa in 1998 when his parents started a church.
“My musical journey began when I was ten years old. I entered many musical competitions and played for my school. I have lots of certificates. Music is all I have and I am trying my ultimate best to make it in the music industry.” Sailas says.
Sailas plays the piano, drums and also bass on keyboard. He started playing instruments in church at the tender age of 15.
Soulful Mindz have not yet gone into the studio. They are at the moment only doing covers and live performances of their music. S.M. is not a gospel group even though the band members are all from a gospel background. The band members whose ages range from 17-27 are: Sailas Mutambalika (founder), Vincent Mabunda (pianist), Phiwe Mutemwa, T. Madlanga, Sbusiso Mbangeni, Duduzile Mhlongo, Lihle Madida, Jordan (a Zimbabwean young poet), Seun Gabriel Baptist (saxophonist), Sailas’ 17 year old younger sister Mary Mutambalika and Refilwe Tshabalala.
Sailas turns 20 on the 22nd of October. We wish him a happy birthday here on L’Afrique Beat and best wishes for the future.
