Memory lane – poem by Tapiwa L Munyari

Going back memory lane,
The familiar path we used to walk together,
Hand in hand like teenage lovers we went.
Alone and teary I trudged along the path,
Reminiscing about bygone days,
Bygone days spent in bliss.

Going back memory lane,
My heart had stuck onto yours,
A match made in heaven I believed.
The world I had promised to give you,
Your future you’d pledged to me,
Promises we made to each other.

Down memory lane,
Mesmerizing like diamond crystals,
Radiant like the sun you were.
Your ebony face I’d tattooed onto my heart,
Your sparkling smiles still lingers in my mind,
That hearty laughter of yours I still remember,
Leaving me with a void feeling.

Painful flashbacks like nightmares haunt me,
An unquenchable thirst for love,
Is all I’m left with.
For your love was like opium to an addict,
Wings to the seventh heaven it gave me.
Like a kite I soared high in the land of love,
With you by my side together we flew.

You were my teddy bear I cuddled to sleep,
Like a puppy happily I tagged along.
Duty bound I was to you,
To rejuvenate your dehydrated soul,
With pure intoxicating love.

You were the sunshine to my heart,
A heart clouded with fog and mist ,
That is all I’m left with,
Bittersweet memories,
Further piercing shards of my shattered heart,
As I walk down memory lane …..
