WCW – Robyn Bromham

My name is Robyn Bromham, I’m an artist living in Adelaide Australia.
I’ve always had a love of drawing and in general creating things with my hands from any early age. My mum was a great knitter and sewer and passed on these skills to my sister and I. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t drawing as a child. Sadly, I gave it all up once I reached high school as my art teacher basically said that I should stick to academic subjects. She was pushing abstract art on us back then and we were not given the opportunity to explore our own style. So I gave up art until I had young children. At one time, I went to a folk art class with a friend, unfortunately I couldn’t afford more classes so borrowed videos and read books to gain more knowledge and eventually taught a few classes myself. Once I had more funds I was able to go to a proper teacher and learn a few other mediums and about colour. I now work with a number of mediums such as acrylics, charcoal pencils, pastels and scratchboards. No matter what art or craft I have taken up I always want to run before I can walk and start doing something way out of my league, but it’s the best way to push yourself to learn and improve.

Never say I can’t, say I will give it a go. You will always surprise yourself at what you are actually capable of. I’ve always had a passion for animals ever-since I was a child. I now love painting the big cats and in particular African animals. I have travelled to Africa 3 times to see animals first hand. I feel a true connection with this amazing country and its people. I think it gets into your blood and never leaves once you have been there. I have made some amazing friends with other African artists and we all share ideas and support each other. I am truly blessed to have become friends and family with these wonderful people. I hope one day to return and meet them face to face.

Although I love painting wildlife, I also paint a lot of pets as well. Many are memorial pieces and it is an honour to be asked to paint these valued family members for them. I think many other artists will agree with me, it doesn’t matter what style we paint, we have this burning desire to just create all the time. Some people think we are a little weird sometimes, but i just think we are unique. We force people to look at the world differently through our art. To evoke feelings of joy, sadness, and wonder.

I hope my art encourages an awareness of the wonderful gift animals are to us, and how fragile our planet is. The first thing I paint when i start an animal is it’s eyes. I found a quote by AD Williams which says, “When I look into the eyes of an animal, I do not see an animal. I see a friend. I see a soul”. This is what I strive to show through my artwork.
