Like I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I’ve been reading Ways of Dying by Zakes Mda. In the book, there’s a woman who is described as pitch black. While doing the book review on air, I took the opportunity to talk about colourism. As you have read from some of my previous posts, I was a victim of colourism at on point in my life. It was quite a challenge for me as it almost drove me to suicidal thoughts. It did push me however into bleaching, which I later stopped after a message from a friend. In Free Your Mind, I really got naked and vulnerable. This I did not for me, but for every dark child who is a victim of colourism.
After the show, the presenter took a selfie with me and posted on her status with the caption, ‘My pitch black friend’. Did I take offence? Nope, I’m healed!
When she called me pitch black, I felt proud!Connie V
I’m pitch black and very proud. I’m from a unique brand of black diamonds, a peculiar treasure that can only be appreciated by a few. If you don’t see the beauty of my pitch black texture, I don’t blame you. It’s not everyone who has eyes to see real beauty.
-Pitch Black… I could adopt this as my name.
