It just might be love

A poem by Constance van Niekerk ©2019

From a distance
It looks like love
Sending each other
Every love emoji in the phone 😍
Cyber hugs 🤗
Cyber kisses 😘
Who knew of their existence 🤷
It just might be love ❤️

From a distance
It looks promising
Nothing can dampen the spirits
Perhaps except a low battery🔋
And the frequent loadshedding
That can really be frustrating!
Love is in the air, eh, I mean online
It just might be love

Nothing else matters
But this white screen
The gadget seems stuck to the palms
The giggles are silent
The smiles unconcealable
World-wild whispers on video calls
Endless typing of messages
Cute memes and long voice notes
This really feels like love

Hun, bae, darling, love
Sugar-plum, sweetie-pie
Motho wa ka/ munhu wangu/ my person
Honey-bunch
Babe,
“I miss you”
“I love you”
“I need you”
Words too sweet and tender
to be expressed between two strangers
lovers who have never met
except on the streets of social media

It started with a friend request
Then that silly dog with a ‘hi!’
Then comments on every post, the likes, loves, the reactions kept coming
Eventually, it was taken to the DM, ‘Wow, I love your profile pic’
Before long, WhatsApp numbers were exchanged
The rest as they say is history
It just might be love!

  1. wouldn’t that be great if you could find romance without ever having to meet them? There’d be far fewer divorces 🤣
