More confused than amused – a poem

Joy is what I feel when people do more than just like my poetry and actually feel inspired to pen masterpieces! After reading the poem ‘Distant Lover, South African poet Xolani Somaca immediately felt inspired for some prose.

So tell me distant lover
Will dreams sail to the horizon eye

Xolani Somaca:

The closeness I feel to you, yet you’re so far
Our intertwined hearts yearning for some love
Being starry-eyed in the midst of frustration
Thinking back to when we first met
Everything fell into place
Now we’re at a stage where we’re more confused than amused.

My little contribution written on the spot in response to your beautiful poem.

Xolani Somaca

Then I decided to reply Xolani:
Distant lover,
so far and yet so near
kindred spirits
in a world full of hatred, lies,
broken dreams and unfulfilled promises
now we’re standing so far apart
this emptiness is tearing us asunder
like an illusion in the dead of the night
silent screams deafening the laughter
happy memories of early years
buried in the past
we remain more confused than amused

And Shaka Ndlovu penned his own response to my response:

Of
cubid’ abuse
his deadly arrows
That are striked like darts directly into our hearts
So tell me distant lover
Will dreams sail to the horizon eye
And erect a centre’s spread in its open palm

Still we remain, more confused than amused

A poem by Xolani Somaca, Constance van Niekerk and Shaka Ndlovu
